Adding a second hard drive to your company's Windows 8 computers can extend the life of a computer that's running out of storage space. It also enables you to create redundancy in order to protect against data loss should your main hard drive fail. Hard drives come in two varieties: external and internal.
In order to add an external hard drive in Windows 8, all you need to do is connect that hard drive to an available USB or comparable port on the outside of your computer. The process of adding an internal hard drive is slightly more complex. Tip. If you're installing an internal hard drive, be sure to ground yourself first to prevent against static shock damage to your computer's delicate internal hardware. Once you're grounded, turn the computer off, unplug the power cable, and then open the case.
Fasten the new hard drive into an available hard-drive bay. Connect one of the available power cables from the computer's power supply to the power port on the hard drive. Connect the SATA or IDE cable from the hard drive to the appropriate port on the computer's motherboard. Close the computer's case and reconnect the power cable.

The process on Windows 7 is only slightly different because of the fact that you need to open Control Panel in a different way. Please help!!After a very long time I have finally ditched my old laptop which was running on XP, and got myself a new desktop with windows 8.I was using a Western Digital external HDD via USB on my laptop, where I stored all the usual -music photos etc.I plugged it into my new desktop and I cannot access the files. When I go to Computer, it lists the available drives, but my WD is not listed.Although, when I go to control panel, hardware and printers, it is listed as a connected device and is displaying 'device is working properly' when I look in properties.Any advice? No, it doesn't show in computer management, only the control panel nder hardware and printers.and no, there was no software to install, simply had to format it when it was new.Mines does not show in My computer, computer management, Smartware, or control panel. I just submitted for an advance RMA to replace the drive. It would be great to see a solution for this and be able to retrieve my files before sending back the 'defective' drive. Mine is WD usb 2.0. A friend just bought a seagate 3.0 and it not only recognized, but transferred 95 GB of videos at over 80 MB/s.

If you still encounter the issue of Windows 8 not recognizing WD portable HD. You should double-check your laptop/desktop USB ports type and any portable hard disk USB connection type; the USB 3.0 protocol device won't work on the USB 2.0 laptop ports. Windows 8 will check for hand-shake and assign the driver to the plug-in devices; in this case, the driver is disk.sys.
